SARCHEX: APPLICATIONS

Flood Defences

Sarchex components are ideal for constructing temporary and permanent flood defences. The individual parts can be easily transported to the affected areas, and rapidly assembled using unskilled labour. The versatility of the system provides a wide variety of configurations, which may be swiftly adapted to the local conditions and requirements.

The main uses in flood defences:

  • Columnar barrier: vertical tubular columns are connected at their adjacent sides, forming a honeycomb assembly.
  • Retaining wall: slab forms are joined and positioned vertically on edge, forming an armature that can support cladding.

Either configuration can be filled with ballast to provide additional strength and stability and left in place until the floods subside. For permanent installations, the formwork can be packed with pre-cast components, or injected with a concrete filler and rendered. Natural finishes such as grass or climbing plants may be used for concealment.

Emergency Sheltering

In disaster zones, swiftly erected safe structures are required to provide maximum internal space with the minimum of materials and components. Ease of transport, speed of assembly, and high structural performance are properties that recommend Sarchex components for emergency relief in these areas. The Sarchex system can offer composite arches, and cylindrical and domed vault structures. These can rapidly replace collapsed and dangerous buildings, providing long term shelter for victims, storage for provisions, and work space for medical and logistical personnel. Structural integrity of the components provides high resistance to after shocks following earthquakes. If sudden floods are expected, the system can be used on raised sites, or it can be configured to deliver structures on stilts.

Roads and Pavements

Hexagonal, rhombic (diamond shaped) and triangular slabs allow flexibility and versatility of design for ground protection and speed of installation. Besides offering rectangular corners, the Sarchex system can easily accommodate variable bends, providing durable coverage for most pavement plans. Damage from localized impacts will be restricted to the affected components, which can be replaced quickly and economically. Sloping surfaces can be achieved by careful orientation and arrangement of the slabs.

Civil Engineering

Most Civil Engineering projects use cast concrete extensively, with steel for reinforcement and support. The formwork may be either demountable or left permanently in place for added protection and strength. The Sarchex system offers both space frame and shell structure configurations for these purposes. Composite columns, walls, roofs, and jointed slabs, all in concrete and steel, can be provided to any required specification. They may be chosen to renovate existing structures, or combined to realize new projects.
